Understanding Trauma Informed Practice

Trauma is when something happens that makes us feel unsafe, scared, or overwhelmed. It can be a one-off event like a car crash or something that happens more often, like abuse. Everyone reacts differently, and trauma can affect how we feel, think, and connect with others.

Trauma is more common than people once thought. It can affect anyone, at any time. It can make it hard to trust others or feel safe, even in everyday situations. But people can recover, especially with the right support.

We are working to change how council services are organised and delivered to create a workforce and service infrastructure that is sensitive and responsive to trauma. This involves creating safe, respectful spaces and relationships where people feel heard and supported. It also supports staff wellbeing and leads to better outcomes for everyone.
