North Lanarkshire Council Celebrates Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2025

North Lanarkshire Council is the first council in Scotland to earn the Breastfeeding Friendly Gold Award and are leading the way by creating supportive communities for families.

This week is Breastfeeding Awareness Week with the focus being the 20th anniversary of The Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act 2005, as well as how breastfeeding can support babies’ growth and development.

You may already be aware that in Scotland, breastfeeding and bottle feeding are both protected by The Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act 2005 and it means that if a person deliberately prevents or stops someone from feeding a child under the age of two in a public place, they are committing a criminal offence.

Anyone should be able to feed a child when required and in the most appropriate place for them, without the fear of interruption or criticism.
